History of the San Antonio Riverwalk

The San Antonio Riverwalk, providing a serene setting amongst the hustle and bustle of such a lively city, has long welcomed visitors – in fact, it is the number one tourist attraction in Texas! But the conception of creating what has become such a must-see destination began with a natural disaster.
In 1921 after a disastrous flood along the San Antonio River, plans were developed for flood control of the river.  Nothing came about until 1929 when Robert Hugman submitted plans for what would become The Riverwalk.  In 1938, the “San Antonio River Beautification Project” began evolution into the 2.5 mile long River walk.  Today, the San Antonio Riverwalk stretches approximately five miles along the banks of the San Antonio River, one story beneath the city streets.  The Riverwalk connects major tourist draws and is lined with restaurants, shops, lodging and entertainment. Take a stroll along the Riverwalk and soak in the scenic beauty of the waterfalls, waterways and lavish landscaping.  The Riverwalk is open to the public 365 days a year and is host to many seasonal festivals – including the renowned San Antonio Fiesta in April and a variety of Christmas events, complete with caroling, parades and so much more!
