Days One through Three — Enjoy Amtrak to California Board Amtrak’s California Zephyr train service for the cross-country journey to Oakland, California and a welcome dinner. Dinner Day Four — San Francisco Touring and Bay Cruise Today we spend the day touring San Francisco. Discover the many sights for which the “City by the Bay” is renowned on a guided tour. Spend free time in the bustling Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 area. In the afternoon, take an invigorating cruise of San Francisco Bay which sails around Alcatraz Island, under the famed Golden Gate Bridge and offers exciting views of the Bay area. Dinner tonight is on Fisherman’s Wharf. Breakfast and dinner Day Five — Wine Tasting and Redwoods National Park Leaving the Bay area this morning, we motor our way through the rich fertile grape growing region of California where a stop has been scheduled for a tasting at a local winery. Approaching Eureka, we come to the famed “Avenue of the Giants.” Here, huge stands of magnificent redwood trees line the road which winds through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Breakfast and dinner Day Six — Rouge River Jetboat Trip and the Redwoods Traveling north, we pass through Redwood National Park before coming to the Oregon border. Following the spectacular Oregon coastline we come to Gold Beach where we embark on a jet boat excursion along the Rogue River. We’ll follow a portion of the old mail boat route before continuing to Coos Bay. Breakfast Day Seven — Oregon Dune Buggy Tour Continuing our coastal adventure today we take to a four-wheel-drive vehicle to explore the fabulous 250-foot sand dunes of Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Back on the road, the magnificent Oregon Coast offers white sand beaches, sheer cliffs and pounding surf. We’ll take the breathtaking Three Capes Scenic Drive before pausing to tour the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Breakfast Day Eight — Columbia River Gorge A guided tour of Portland includes Lloyd Center, the downtown area on the Willamette River, Old Town Historic District and famed International Rose Test Gardens. Later, we visit beautiful Columbia River Gorge, where sheer cliffs rise as high as 2,000 feet! A stop at Crown Point offers spectacular gorge views from the Vista House, then we’ll see splendid Multnomah Falls, mammoth Bonneville Lock and Dam. Tonight, join your fellow travelers during a fun-filled welcome dinner at the Rheinlander German Restaurant, a unique, festive dining experience complete with singing servers. Breakfast and dinner Day Nine — Mount St. Helens and Mt. Rainier Scenic Railway In Washington we stop at the Mount St. Helens visitor center for a look at the still active volcano which made news in 1980 with its massive eruption. Later, our excursion aboard the steam-powered Mt. Rainier Scenic Railway will feature views of the state’s highest peak and a barbecue dinner at Mineral Lake. Breakfast and dinner Day Ten — Seattle City Tour and Museum of Flight Our guided tour of Seattle includes the downtown, Pioneer Square Historic District, Waterfront Park, the Space Needle and the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Locks. Following free time for lunch and browsing at famed Pike Place Market, we'll spend the afternoon viewing the numerous displays and historic aircraft, Space Gallery and Boeing’s original Red Barn factory at Seattle’s outstanding Museum of Flight. Breakfast and dinner Days Eleven through Thirteen — Travel Home After free time in the morning, we climb aboard the Empire Builder. Sit back and relax as the beauty of the nation’s landscape captivates you. On board Amtrak, there is plenty of room to walk around, stretch your legs and chat with fellow travelers on your rail trip.
